Interventions at the great prayer room

Gran sala de oración con telas

In the sixties of the last century, the walls of the Synagogue of El Transito underwent a transformation since they were upholstered by some silk materials that imitated the models of the Monastery of Las Huelgas, in Burgos. Such silk materials were donated by the family Pinto Coriat, of Sephardic origin.

The decoration consisted in some vertical cloths with vegetal motifs upholstering three parameters up to the wooden frieze on its lower part by a border adorned with heraldic motifs alternated with the Star of David. Between the wall and the silk, there was a plastic layer and another one of foam rubber, all of them fixed to the parameter with nails of different size.

The conservation problems that caused these upholsteries were numerous, making difficult Trabajos de restauración en la Gran Sala de Oración de la Sinagoga (agosto 2015).Salto de línea the cleaning and maintenance work. For these reasons, it was decided to remove them and offer the walls an aspect more similar to the original one: flat plaster walls with tempera painting finishing.Salto de línea This intervention has been carried out in two stages: the removal of the canvases and adaptation and reconditioning of the walls.

Over the month of December of 2014, the removal of its upholsteries and its two preparation layers were carried out in order to be able to diagnose and value the preservation state of the wall coverings for their later adequate adaptation intervention. The recovered canvases were cleaned and folded in different groups and they are currently wrapped with breathable tissue-paper.

Additionally, over the month of August of 2015, the works with regard to the cleaning, preparation and the chromatic resolution of the wall coverings have been carried out. Such intervention has included the elimination of all nails that were still on the walls and were not removed in the first phase, the filling of all cavities and reconstruction of the profiles of the corners and the sanding and the preparation of the walls in order to apply the tempera painting. This kind of painting has been used because it is much more compatible with the original materials of the work and because it allows the perspiration of the walls. Regarding the color, it has been tried to look for a neutral tonality that is integrated in the work and allows the contemplation of the decorative plaster works and the roof.

The most interesting aspect of this second intervention phase has been the carrying out of many surveys that have allowed us to know the functioning of the wall, at an aesthetic as well as a stratigraphic level, confirming this way the absence of pictorial decoration on the materials that have been evaluated. The stratigraphic analysis also means a start point for the carrying out of new studies and interventions about the decoration program of the synagogue.Salto de línea
